worked well for me for Spanish and a bit for French, languages I have taken formal classes on. But trying to learn a completely new language like Japanese, something I have zero experience with besides watching anime and enjoying to Japanese language media, is incredibly difficult, there doesn't really seem to be any comprehensive explanation of why certain words sound the way they do versus how they are spelled. It doesn't give you the so-called "rules of the road" in a functional way.
I loved Jumpspeak at first, when using it for languages I know fairly well. But now, trying to learn a new language (Japanese), it's frustrating. The very first lesson had me translating sentences with many words I haven't seen and only one of the six words it's taught me. In the speaking portion, what it's having me say sometimes don't match the defined words at the top, and it sometimes pronounces things completely different than what is written (saying "do" for "nochi").
What I like is the focus on speaking and pronunciation. I paid extra for the AI chat bot, which is an good tool, but not as good as just talking to a native speaker, which is often cheaper. Like similar apps, you're expected to learn grammar implicitly by pattern recognition. May have fixed bugs by now, but I've seen Spanish in my German lessons. I've also had issues with numbers, where I'm expected to say the number on the screen (eg "2"), but no guide on pronouncing it.
I wish during the Speaking review it showed the super literal translation. Otherwise i find myself repeating words accurately, but I'm not mentally connecting them with a meaning in practice. Also, the language I'm learning doesn't require Subj/Verb/Obj word order, so having the primary exercise be, "order the following words" isn't meaningful for learning the language. The app is helpful, in that, it is a way to practice speaking. However, i know it's not actually teaching me the language.
