FINDING TRAIN TICKETS USING THE NORTHERN TRAIN APP
Finding train tickets with the Northern app’s built-in search function is easy, simply:
• Enter your origin station and the destination you will be travelling to.
• Select the ticket type you want to find (single, return, open return, or flexi & season).
• Select the date and time you will be travelling.
• Add the number of adult / child travellers
• Enter any promo codes you would like to apply to the journey.
Once you enter these details, the Northern app will automatically find you the cheapest train tickets.
Don’t forget about the new Northern family ticket, giving you the chance to travel with your whole family on one ticket. The Northern Family ticket is valid for up to two adults and four children, who are under the age of 15. All you need to do is purchase the ticket through our app and away you go.

I like this app. On occasion it makes the difference between choosing to use the train or not. One plus is that, unlike Trainline, there are no booking fees. And, despite 'belonging' to Northern, you can buy tickets for travel in any part of the country. Finally, I like that you can select routes to show in the Live Tracker based on your recent searches in the app - that saves a lot of faff in the heat of the moment!
This app is atrocious. Difficult to buy tickets, prices are higher than buying on the internet. If you buy them on the internet you can't actually access the ticket to show it without downloading this app. However, if you purchased the ticket as a guest on the website there is no way to get it into the app and you end up trying to explain yourself to the person to exit at the gate. When you go to your account profile in the app, it takes you back out to the internet to login to see it. Useless!!
Doesn't offer the cheapest fare (like split-save from other apps). Remembers the opposite direction I routinely travel in for buying tickets... assume a bug? No option to manually favourite travel times and stations. Every journey (multiple times per week) has to be manually entered again and again for the same stations and times. That's simply embarrassing design. On a plus side, the travel notifications/delays are useful and well implemented.
Works well in most circumstances, but I have some niggles about the way journeys are selected sometimes. In one case the app proposed a journey via Halifax, although the train was booked up. I had to make different searches to find out that there was an alternative route via Leeds which really should have been offered in the original search. Also I recently altered a booking. When searching for a replacement trip you are not offered the normal options such as Via and Avoid stations.
