I swear to God, this book is so great. It does a great job at showing PTSD in a medieval setting, along with same-sex love relationships in this context. The tragedy (and trauma) is always on point, never leaning too much into it, instead showing the brutal reality of war and the suffering of the veterans who are lucky (or unlucky) enough to survive it. It's not a game of politics (even the protagonist doesn't like those), it's one of war, combat, sanity, relationships, and all in a nuanced way.
