Brandubh (pronounced bran-du or bran-duv, meaning “Black Raven” in Old Irish) is Ireland’s own version of the ancient tafl family of strategy board games — the same lineage that inspired Viking Hnefatafl. Played on a distinctive 7x7 grid, it tells a story of conflict between a king and his defenders who must outthink and outmaneuver raiders attempting to capture him. Unlike chess, there are no identical armies. Each side has different objectives, creating a dynamic and asymmetric game of pure strategy and anticipation.
