I played this game for the first time in 2021, and rated it low because of greed and monetization. Fast forward to 2025, and the game is on Play Pass, and things are indeed free of ads and purchase, but they limit how many "ads" you can "watch" per hour. Within 3 minutes of playing, I was unable to do anything due to not having and available "ads." This is yet another game trying for a sneaky cash grab on Play Pass. It should be a requirement that you only release the FULL, UNEDITED game to PP.
I first got into this game in August of 2024. It was a quirky, interesting and fun game that I actually enjoyed. I didn't mind the barrage of ads required to watch too much, until this most recent 2.0 update. I was playing this more than any other game on my phone, and with my long train rides, that's saying something. This most recent update has altered the game mechanics fundamentally, removing any of the joy I had in playing. It used to be fun.
I do find the game enjoyable. though ads take forever to resolve so I generally avoid them. The computer players seem to have a significant advantage in later levels to the point where you get steamrolled frequently. I also find they prefer to target the player even on levels designed as a free for all. building up your hero and troops levels is initially fun, but slows substantially. unlocking the other races is largely pointless as resources are limited unless you spend money.
I can not even begin to fathom how good this game is. The rules are simple yet complicated under specific circumstances, creative and differently generated maps each time, and so much more. The only thing I wish for now is a multiplayer mode, bigger map sizes, and custom maps that can be made and shared with others. Otherwise, it's a great and addictive game. Edit: I just found out that it is multiplayer and that they are working on a map making feature that is currently in Beta. I'm in heaven.
